How To Train Vines On An Obelisk

There is something undeniably magical about climbing plants spiraling up a beautifully crafted obelisk. It brings vertical drama, bursts of color and architectural artistry to your garden’s landscape. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just getting your hands dirty, training vines to grow up an obelisk is one of the most striking ways to elevate your garden.

Why choose an obelisk for climbing plants?
An obelisk isn’t just a plant support, it’s a statement piece. Obelisks add height and elegance to your outdoor space while serving as the unique structure for vines and small shrubs to grow upon. Unlike flat trellises, obelisks provide a 3-D colorful framework that vines can wind around giving your garden and eye-catching vertical interest from all angles in every season.

Training Your Vine to Climb

  • Plant strategically at the base

Place your vine a few inches from the base of your obelisk.  This ensures the vine’s natural growth reaches toward the structure rather than growing outward uselessly.  For best results, consider high impact flowering climbers like clematis, star jasmine or shrub roses.

  • Start training early

Young shoots are your friend.  When vines are still flexible, gently wrap them around the obelisk’s vertical supports and horizontal rails. Most vines, whether twining or tendril climbers, will take direction better when their stems are soft and pliable.

  • Use soft ties, not wire

To prevent damage, guide climbing stems with soft ties or garden twine.  These support materials secure vines snugly without cutting into stems which can stunt grown or even harm the plant.

  • Rotate Growth & Encourage Coverage

Rather than letting all stems row straight up, take time each week to redirect shoots toward open area around the entire obelisk.  This encourages fuller, more even foliage coverage and a richer display of flowers or leaves.

  • Prune & maintain for health and shape

Prune wayward shoots to control shape, encourage airflow, and keep the climb focused upward. Regular check ins prevent tangles and help maintain that carefully curated garden design.

Vines to grow up an obelisk

Choosing the right vine means paring plant growth habits with your obelisk’s size and style. Some of our favorites are:

  • Clematis – easy, elegant flowers climbing beautifully around supports

  • Star Jasmine – fragrant blossoms that bring both scent and style

  • Sweet peas – gorgeous season blooms that cascade upward. Can be finicky but worth the effort

  • Rose bush – small shrub roses are lovely trained horizontally.

The key is working early on with young uprights from the start.
There are so many vines to choose from but with an obelisk as your support, they will all benefit from structure, direction and elevated presentation.
